The Peyia sea caves
A stretch of limestone coast cut into arches, hollows and small caves, with clear water below.
Head north out of Coral Bay and the sandy coast gives way to low limestone cliffs. The sea has cut arches, hollows and small caves into the pale rock. On a calm day, the water is clear enough to see the bottom a long way out.
By car, follow the road towards Agios Georgios and take one of the tracks towards the cliff edge, where you can walk along the top. The arches can only be entered from the water, and boat routes and departure points vary.
The Edro III lies just along the coast below the cliffs. The 80-metre cargo ship was carrying plasterboard when it ran aground in a storm in 2011, and it remains there. View it from the shore and do not climb aboard.
Worth knowing
- No barriers at the cliff edgeThe rock is undercut in places. Keep children close and stay back from the lip.
- Wear sturdy shoesThe limestone is uneven and sharp underfoot, so flip-flops are not suitable.
- Viewing from the waterCheck current routes and departure points with boat operators. Entry to the arches depends on calm water.
