The arcaded stone church of Panagia Evangelistria in Kathikas under a deep blue sky

20 minutes by car

Kathikas and the wine villages

The road inland climbs through vineyards to Kathikas, where the Laona plateau is several degrees cooler than the coast.

Kathikas is 20 minutes inland and several hundred metres above the coast. It is a stone village in the middle of the Laona plateau, with a handful of tavernas. The road continues through Arodes, Ineia and Drouseia, with views across the Akamas and down to the sea.

Two wineries, Vasilikon and Sterna, are based at the village, with others along the road. Their wines include the Cypriot grape varieties Xynisteri for white wine and Maratheftiko for red. These grapes are grown in very few places outside Cyprus. Both wineries offer tastings; check their opening times and current arrangements before visiting.

The road back down is less comfortable after dark. A daytime visit also makes it easier to see the views from the plateau and the village roads.

Worth knowing

  • Choose a driverCyprus has a low drink-driving limit, and it is enforced. Agree before the tasting who will drive back.
  • Check opening timesSmaller family-run wineries keep their own hours, so call before setting out.
  • Cooler than the coastThe plateau is several degrees cooler than the coast. An extra layer can be useful, particularly in spring.
